A process for producing the matrix of a fresnelled optical element is
disclosed. Discrete elongate elements are first aligned and held in
side-by-side relation so that the element ends together can be formed to
the shape of a continuous optical surface. Thereafter the elements are
released and realigned, typically on a surface, to form the matrix of a
fresnelled lens element. Techniques of changing the angular alignment of
the discrete faces of the lens elements are described.
